Okay, So I don't ever, like ever watch any movie I think is going to be sappy or cute or too lovey dovey. I have always been that way, it is just not my thing, if it's funny maybe but typically no. Like the Notebook, I never ever will watch. I just don't like the smooching and awkward blah de blah...
Anyways so The Space Between Us, popped up on Netflix last week and at first I was like "NO WAY GROSS TEEN LOVE MOVE". But Space, and NASA, and living on Mars that I am interested in, but bleh to the kissy stuff. BUT then the trailer started and Netflix only showed one part that would make it so I'd be like "oh, maybe not'.

The trailer made it look like a post-apocalyptic movie where this kid from mars is now on Earth, so of course I was all in because Space and an Apocalypse (two of my all time favorite things!! I felt it that way because the scene it showed a odd boy interacting with a older man in a very odd homeless outfit exchanging sunglasses and and boy asked what the man's favorite thing about earth was. I mean from he looks of the scene and only that being shown it kinda looks like it was past the end of the world. It also is one of the (my type of cute) cutest scenes in the film!!
Also I was like okay these kids are both good actors in films I've liked. The girl (Britt Robertson) in Tomorrowland which I remembered. The boy (Asa Butterfield) it took me a while and I finally gave in and looked him up because I couldn't land my mind on what he was in and he was in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.
SPOILERS AHEAD:::::: going to be a synopsis and me recalling my thoughts while watching. First I want to say I was incredibly impressed by this film, I do highly recommend it even if you don't really like happy feel good movies, because thats pretty much what this is. But also like I said it has some of my favorite things in it, but sorry no apocalypse in this one (I know super disappointing), but if you want that I suggest "The Umbrella Academy", if you haven't seen that yet.. Also I should be writing something about that soon. I started notes on like 100 tv shows and gotta pick one and rewatch and write while watching! Okay lets jump in!!
I felt like there was quite a few of very predictable things happening, with foreshadowing and my own assumptions but also equally I seconded guessed many of my original thoughts but in the end most of them were what ended up happening. Also I watched this with my boyfriend (who doesn't say much during movies) but he didn't think most of the things i predicted were right, so maybe I'm just too good at guessing. Also yes I'm a talker and a guesser while watching pretty much any movies, I'll either ask 100 questions like the other person knows the answers or just keep guessing everything!!
So we start off with a NASA crew speaking before heading out to live on Mars, not just land but live on mars. Here is where we get into some spoilers and my guesses. So the only astronaut who speaks before leaving is also the only woman going on the mission; Sarah Elliot. Now as she's standing there saying she can only answer a few questions I'm already throwing theories out. Me I say one of them is going to get her pregnant... And my boyfriend is like do you think, and I was like yeah I mean the story is about a boy from Mars and she is the only woman.... So I was kinda right, soon after they go up in space they show her throwing up and I was like yes. Well, it was not someone on the mission with her, because that would have definitely not made for a very good story now that I'm thinking about that. Anyways so someone on Earth is the father, the head of the mission the one who came up with the idea and the rest of NASA choose to keep it a secret, so whom ever the father is we don't know because well he doesn't know... OR DOES HE, OR DOESN'T HE?? There is kinda where I made a guess but kept going back and forth though-out the entire film from my original thought and changing theories though-out the film.
So the boy is born his name is Gardner (what an odd name) anyways he is different then any other human because I mean he was in space throughout the entire pregnancy and born in space so really they don't think it would ever be safe for him to come to Earth because his body is significantly different and would potentially die because of gravity.

Alight then we jump ahead 16 years, an emo teen, sad/lonely/crazy smart because he was raised by scientist/astronauts!! But well he is sick of it and wants commination to be with other people and to be on Earth. Gardner has been communicating with a girl on Earth Tulsa (a odd name also but it's a nick name I don't think we ever learn her real name)! Anyways so Tulsa is in a not good or happy situation on Earth she is in a foster home with a drunk so she is miserable. So both emo teens looking for someone to connect with and somehow found each-other online, that isn't really explained.
So she is planning on getting out at age 18 to take care of herself and get away from that. Gardner is plotting and planning and wishing to get to Earth and starts putting everything in motion. Of course she has no idea he is actually on Mars she thinks he is in New York I think, and not able to leave the house because of a disease. She's a pretty bad ass chick who can drive a motorcycle, fly a plane and just over all is a tough girl (some of it an act) but she's pretty sick!
LOL at his robot, his entire first conversation with the robot is pretty funny. The robot keeps saying he is his best friend and talks about his feelings but Gardner reminds him he is just a robot, then takes his head to get some information and goes on his own little field trip to find some items of his mothers, he also breaks out and goes on a crazy Mars ride!!
This movie really has all the elements suspense, action, wonder, the ups and downs, life death, blah blah, it is very packed and also very very beautifully show, everything is just pretty awesome.
So he gets in an argument and then everyone decides he should be able to go to Earth, but of course Nathaniel doesn't think he should. His motives are questioned that he just doesn't want the world to find out about Gardner but he say's it's because his health. Nathaniel had been MIA for most of those 16 years we skipped, no one knew where or really why. He seems like bad dude and he's kinda a dick but really I get it.
They decide to let Gardner get ready and come to earth, because of his body he had to have some surgeries and blah blah blah before he could be read. And of course as soon as he was on Earth they just put him in a hospital type room and kept running test. But he wants out, so he hatches another plan and runs away. I mean the whole time it's kind of unbelievable how long it takes them to catch up to him but otherwise it wouldn't lead the full adventure.
So Gardner takes a older gentlemen's clothes and is on his way to try to get to Tulsa. With his sunglasses, this outfit and his weird Mars behavior he is like a super adorable little kid. Like I'd adopt him if I could, I mean the actor is a kinda weird looking kid but in a weirdo cute goth way! Maybe because he plays pretty much a emo kid in both films I've mentioned but really rooting for him here!

Okay so Gardner breaks out, runs away and makes it Tulsa!! Creeply walks into her high school and right up to her, but like how is he supposed to know any different and what is creepy or normal or any of that. She is like pissed, we learn that he hasn't spoken to her in months which I suppose I could have guessed but wasn't thinking of all the time that passed that he was getting ready to come to Earth and of course she has no idea that he is from Mars. He did good at keeping the secret he was supposed to. So she does't react well and smacks him and gives him a hard time. He kinda tires to start to tell her the truth but who could or would believe that he was from Mars, because no one knew!!
So he goes with her to her place, then the NASA people find him, they escape in a pretty action packed way. In a plane that she flies then they get in an accident, have to steal a few cars and money, and quickly use someones tablet at a restaurant. (I'm skipping a bunch here because, just go watch it!!
Then we get into the cute part the love birds on the run, a montage of scenes that are way too super adorable and gross, but cute. Even my boyfriend was like you either pick like the most ridiculous anxiety driven horror movies or like.... And I was like no, never have I ever picked a cute movie that is not what I do, the tailer was misleading, but I mean at this point we are at least half way though, its compelling it really is.

The anxiety driven horror movie he was referring to was "Green Room" (2015) we had just watched that a few nights before. For some reason I thought that it would be funny to watch a punk band accidentally play a neo-natzi venue.. BUT I mean if i pay attention to the genre I would have known it wasn't. But It was also a film I would recommend, but be prepared. Also always love Anton Yelchin, RIP dude. |
,Okay back to the cheesy cuteness, I'll add a few photos but don't need to describe it all. They go shopping, have a almost serious but defiantly real life conversation on liking each other, go camping, visit a man who marries people so get confetti thrown at them walking out, and some other things... This conversation is pretty good, I mean humans don't know how to say how they feel and stuff, It's so hard even when I try my best, and I see it in others too so it's a good point in the story! The difference of growing up somewhere very different and coming to a place where humans are so bottled up, it would be incredibly weird. But also we need to be more like Gardner and just say what we feel when we feel it. I mean sometimes I do and it's not good but its better then replaying it in your head over and over and over until you drive yourself insane!!!
" People don't go around saying what they feel when they feel it. They have guards and shields and other metaphors. " "Why" "We're all messed up, scared being something we're not! If we all went around just blaring our innermost desires for the people we feel them for we might end up happy or something"
Gets a bit awkward when they actually start to get kissy and climb into a sleeping bag and boom they are naked. But really it's not that awkward nothing is shown, I'm just like real weird when it comes to all of that. I'd rather see someone get their arm chopped off, ha, yeah I'm pretty F'ed up!!

ALSO side not, this conversation here is my life!! (these two stills are what they say right before the quote I typed up above.) Sorry for going out of order but thats just how my mind works...
I'm sure others can find this super relatable too. I seem upset when I'm uncomfortable. And with my anxieties and just being me quite a-lot makes me uncomfortable. And I usually seem extra upset because I don't want to upset other people and tell them I am because it's usually for something weird and not anyones fault. Or sometimes it's the way people have fun and I'm not really an excited on the outside kind of person. I need to be more. I show when I'm sad I usually can't control that but when I'm happy or excited or any of that I am super reserved and it sucks, but I don't know how how to change it, but yeah this is a good relatable message!

Also a really good point they make here is.. (wtf was I going to say). I legit don't remember and then got to leave work. So picking up like 5 days after I started writing this!! How my mind works! Ha, let me rewatch a bit.....
Okay, so the cuteness takes a little break and Gardner gets sick and passes out and ends up in the hospital. It is NOW that Tulsa finally believe him that he is from Mars. She tries to cut out to go see his Dad before social services show up for her. He convinces her to break him out and take him with them. They get there, it isn't the encounter they hope it would be. His Dad flips as soon as he sees Sara's photo thinking it's a scam.... Gardner takes him self to the water and pretty much knows and says he's going to die. But he's happy for what he did and met Tulsa. And I legit thought he would die too, I predicted it as soon as they got super cute.
I mean I don't watch many cute movies like this but the ones I do remember (I think) like "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and maybe
A Walk to Remember" (which I never chose to watch but sister did), ummmm Idk I think someone ended up dying at the end. Cute, Cute, Cute, BOOM DEAD. But okay it's safe to say Gardner doesn't die... Keep reading though...
HUGE GIVE AWAY HERE SO STOP IF YOU
DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING!! SERIOUSLY!!

So Dad really isn't Dad he's the Uncle. And the father is... drum roll... who I originally guessed.. we'll after my first bad assumption that one of the astronauts on the mission were the father......... is Nathaniel. The father of pretty much the entire mission and living on Mars. Everyone wondered why he was so excited the concerned and had so much emotion when Sara died giving birth. YES I left that out until now. Anyways why he was such a dick and disappeared and was obsessed with keeping him a secret and all of that was he was the father!! And he couldn't go up into space because of his own health, and Garner shouldn't have come to earth. Anyways SO he does't die they have to get him away from Earth's gravitational pull, while doing this they learn Nathaniel can indeed go into space. And Tulsa gets a tase of close to space and no gravity.. Another super cute moment and smooch then Gardner and Nathaniel ship off back to Mars...
(SERIOUSLY NO ONE DIES EXCEPT THE MOM AT THE BEGGING)
How incredibly twisted of me to say that. I mean I don't want people to die, movie's just don't usually have happy endings like that. I mean way way way to cute but also super pumped he did die! I didn't feel like crying. I hate movies that make me cry even more then cute ones that make me uncomfortable. Also why is that a thing why can't I like cute things.... I need to learn to for myself and my relationship ha. I mean we are good but if we both were cutesy and stuff that would be good. But it's just not who or how I am....
so blah, blah, blah.... IT GET'S EVEN CUTER. Tulsa is adopted by Kenda, who is pretty much Gardners mom. She raised him on Mars and cared for him, she also revealed earlier in the movie that she could not have children of her own. Obviously Kendra is on Earth, not sure why she didn't go back? Maybe only a certain amount of people can be on Mars at this point. BUT so her new job on Earth is training people at NASA to be astronauts and go up to Mars. So cut to Tulsa training.... Nothing more is shown but you can damn well assume that girl is on the moon!!!!! (we kind of forget about the uncle though, at leasst that
